Our motors are cooled by the IC411 method: the shaft-mounted fan blows ambient air over the frame fins. This method assumes that the air around the motor is continuously renewed. If the heat from the motor's losses cannot leave a closed cabinet, the inside warms up and the motor tries to cool itself with ever hotter air.
That is why the catalogue lists closed enclosures and restricted air flow among the conditions to be assessed separately. Selection and installation should consider:
- The air temperature reached inside the enclosure while the motor runs (report it when ordering if above +40 °C).
- Free space behind the fan cover for air intake and unobstructed flow along the fins.
- Fresh air inlet and hot air outlet for the enclosure (vents or an extractor).
- A larger power size or a winding temperature sensor if the internal temperature stays high.
This is especially important for acoustic enclosures, drives built into machine housings and sheet-metal boxes exposed to the sun. For more detail, see the article on IC411 cooling and the effect of the installation site.
