In a dusty plant the main risk is usually outside the motor, not inside. When the gaps between the frame fins and the fan cover grille fill with dust, the air blown by the fan no longer reaches the frame and the motor runs hotter at the same load. The catalogue's periodic maintenance list accordingly asks for the motor to be kept clean and the fan cover and cooling channels left clear.
- Clean the fan cover grille and the spaces between the fins according to a maintenance plan; the dustier the area, the shorter the interval.
- Where possible, place the motor away from the dust source (screen, crusher mouth, bag discharge) rather than right beside it.
- When cleaning, do not aim compressed air directly at the shaft seal or the terminal box gasket.
In areas with combustible dust such as flour, feed or coal dust, a separate hazardous-area classification is required; a standard IP55 motor is not designed for such a zone, so be sure to state this when ordering. For example applications, see the stone crushing plant motors page.
