Gearbox oil is not a single product that suits every gearbox. In a worm gearbox the contact between worm and wheel is mainly sliding, while in helical gears it is mainly rolling; so the recommended oil type and viscosity for the two can differ. Mineral and synthetic oils should not be mixed casually either.

Look for the right information in this order:

  1. gearbox nameplate: oil type and quantity are often written here,
  2. gearbox catalogue or operating manual: quantity by mounting position and change interval,
  3. if still unsure, ask us with the gearbox type, frame and ratio.

General factors that shorten the change interval are high oil temperature, dusty or humid surroundings and continuous heavy load. When oil is drained, its colour and any metal particles give clues about gear condition. Some small frames may be specified as lubricated for life; this too is confirmed with the nameplate and catalogue.
