Choosing Electric Motors by Industry
Every application asks something different of the motor: continuous operation on a pump, suitable starting torque on a conveyor, efficient continuous running on a fan, shock resistance on a crusher. In this category you will find electric motor pages prepared by industry and machine type. All industrial applications use three-phase asynchronous motors in the 0.25–355 kW range and in IE3, IE4 and IE5 efficiency classes.
Choosing Poles (Speed) by Application
-
Centrifugal pump, booster — 2/4 poles: the flow-pressure curve is met at high speed
-
Fan, exhaust fan, blower — 4/6 poles: balance of noise and efficiency; low speed for large diameters
-
Compressor — 2/4 poles: stability under continuous load and high starting torque
-
Conveyor, elevator, mixer — 4/6/8 poles: suitable input speed together with a gearbox
-
Crusher, screen, mill — 4/6/8 poles: torque reserve and durability under shock loads
Starting and Drives
The starting method is chosen by load type: direct-on-line gives high initial torque; star-delta reduces starting current; a soft starter limits mechanical shock on pumps, fans and conveyors; a frequency inverter (VFD) provides speed control and energy optimization on pumps and fans.
