The supply often still called “380 volts” is today a three-phase network with a rated voltage of 400 V. On this supply, the connection is set by whichever of the two nameplate values equals the line voltage: a motor marked 230/400 V is connected in star (Y), one marked 400/690 V in delta (Δ). In both cases each winding sees the same voltage; only the arrangement of the terminal links changes.
| Nameplate voltage | Connection on a 400 V supply | Star-delta starting |
|---|---|---|
| 230/400 V (Δ/Y) | Star | Not possible |
| 400/690 V (Δ/Y) | Delta | Possible |
In the standard arrangement of the HEM catalogue, ratings of 3 kW and below are wound for 230/400 V and ratings of 4 kW and above for 400/690 V. For example, the 3 kW 1,500 rpm 100L2-4 model is connected in star on a 400 V supply, while the 11 kW 1,500 rpm 160M-4 model is connected in delta. Check the link arrangement against the nameplate before commissioning; if your panel has a star-delta starter, order the motor wound for 400/690 V.
