Aluminium body worm gearboxes are compact, quiet and economical power transmission solutions for systems requiring low speed and high torque. Supplied with the HEM Motor manufacturer guarantee, these gearboxes provide high reduction ratios in a single stage and are delivered quickly from stock.

Technical Specifications
- Gear design: One worm screw and one bronze worm wheel; the motor-driven worm screw turns the bronze wheel and transmits motion to the output shaft
- Single-stage reduction ratios: 1/7 – 1/10 – 1/20 – 1/30 – 1/50 – 1/80 – 1/100
- Example output speed: with a 1400 rpm motor and a 1/30 ratio, the output speed is approximately 46 rpm
- Most preferred ratios: 1/10, 1/20, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50, 1/60
- Housing material: Aluminium housing (light, economical, suitable for small powers); cast iron housing alternative for heavy duty
- Common frame sizes: NMRV 30 – NMRV 40 – NMRV 50 – NMRV 63 – NMRV 75 – NMRV 90 – NMRV 110 – NMRV 130 – NMRV 150
- Compatible motor powers: 0.12 kW, 0.18 kW, 0.25 kW, 0.37 kW, 0.55 kW, 0.75 kW, 1.1 kW, 1.5 kW, 2.2 kW, 3 kW, 4 kW
- Motor mounting types: B3, B5, B14
Housing Types and Models
| Housing Type | Advantages | Typical Models |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium housing | Light, economical, suitable for small powers | NMRV 30, NMRV 40, NMRV 50, NMRV 63 |
| Cast iron housing | More durable, vibration-resistant, suitable for heavy duty | NMRV 90, NMRV 110, NMRV 130, NMRV 150 and above |
The most widely used models are the NMRV 30, NMRV 40, NMRV 50, NMRV 63, NMRV 75, NMRV 90, NMRV 110, NMRV 130 and NMRV 150 frame sizes. The corresponding HEM30, HEM40, HEM50, HEM63, HEM75, HEM90, HEM110 and HEM130 worm gearboxes are available from our stock.
Key Features
- Very high reduction ratios up to 1/100 in a single stage
- Low vibration, low noise and smooth running thanks to the shock-free worm drive
- High ratios in a smaller volume than helical gearboxes; an advantage in machines with limited space
- Self-locking capability at certain ratios: when the motor stops, the load cannot back-drive, drop or reverse the system (an advantage for lifting systems, inclined conveyors and door systems)
- More economical and more readily available than helical gearboxes
- Easy handling and installation thanks to the lightweight aluminium housing
Applications
- Conveyor systems (low speed, high torque)
- Packaging machines (quiet operation advantage)
- Automation systems
- Door mechanisms (self-locking advantage)
- Mixers (low-speed mixing)
- Food machinery (vibration-free operation)
- Textile machinery (smooth motion)
- Small crusher systems
- Crane auxiliary mechanisms
- Fan, ventilation and handling systems (low speed control)
Gearbox Selection
When selecting a worm gearbox, the following criteria should be evaluated together:
- Actual ratio and output speed
- Output shaft diameter
- Housing material (aluminium or cast iron)
- Bearing and bronze wheel quality
- Oil type
- Duty time and service factor
- Motor mounting dimensions
Due to the worm gear design, efficiency is lower than that of helical gearboxes; heat build-up and energy losses may increase at high ratios. For industrial applications running continuously under very heavy loads, helical or planetary gearboxes may be more advantageous.
Lubrication and Maintenance
Since worm gearboxes operate with sliding friction, oil quality is critical. Synthetic gear oil or EP-additive oils are generally preferred. Poor-quality oil increases wear, damages the bronze wheel and raises operating temperature. As the housing temperature can rise under prolonged full load, using quality oil directly affects gearbox life.
